Well, as you all know, I sold my 240SX to a friend (Guy1). I walked into work and let a few co-workers know and they all said it was breaking the cardinal rule - you don't lend large amounts of money or sell a car to a friend. I learned my lesson, considering I was being nice to said friend since he said he had to walk to work and his other car was broken down. No problem, I so happen to be selling my car and said friend stated he would pay me back the final amount over the weekend. Did it ever happen? No, it took me 2 months to get the rest of my money and by the end of it, I was fed up. After leaving numerous voice mails, text messages, messages on AIM, and myspace, it seemed like he was avoiding me. Every time in person that I encountered him, he gave me his reassurances - but they were as I figured, empty assurances.
How did I get my money back after that? I had to physically take the car away. What do I find inside? Brand new stereo equipment. Oh, couldn't pay me back the amount you owed me? Do you have your priorities straight? I don't care if you bought it before you got the car - but at least have the courtesy to return a call and let me know what's going on instead of making me look like a big fucking asshole.
Then I wake up and see this shit: (Let's call him Guy2) "damn man, you didnt have to take his car back that urgently. he (as in, Guy1) just
owed you 300 bucks for a couple of weeks. if you need it asap, you
should have talked to him about it and see whats up, like i have been
doing for the past 2 months.
he was gonna pay me back that day you took the car.
he owes me 500, from ONE YEAR AGO. im leaving for japan on dec 14th, and i need all the money i can get."
Seriously, what the fuck, not only am I one to get shafted for two months, but he shafts a friend?
My reply: "Ah, I knew this was going to come. I've been trying to get him to pay
me back for the last 2 months - with zero returned phone calls, zero
returned messages, on everything I could contact him with - phone,
myspace, his friends. I didn't want it to come to that - but it did.
Also, I don't know him as well as you - so there was a possibility I'd
never see it again.
Take it for what you will - this is just a bad situation all together."
Guy2: "well maybe you should have TALKED to him first by approching him at work like i did and work something out."
At this point, I'm thinking that maybe I didn't say that I tried to get a hold of him, nope, I did: "Obviously, you do not know the whole story. As I said, I've tried to
get a hold of him for 2 months. When he finally did call me back, it
was after I took the car. Also, he didn't have the $500 for you, no
matter how much he tried to convince you that he did - because he had
to borrow money from his manager to pay _me_ back. Now, I know I seem
like an asshole having to do this - but how else was I going to get him
to pay me back? I'm holding on to a pink slip with NO car and paying
for insurance that isn't even for something I own. Lost money for 2
months worth of insurance on top of the $300 he didn't have for me.
Here's something else to think about while you're at it: if he owed you
$500 for over a year, don't you think he should have paid you back that
amount before he bought a Cressida, a 240SX, and his new stereo system
for his car? Yeah, I think he's got his priorities out of order -
especially to you, since you're his friend and he owes you quite a nice
lump of money."
Guy2's reply, with rather stupid logic: "yea, and me trying to get my money back from one year ago is a certainly a shorter time than your two months.
great logic."
And then it dawned on me, this wasn't about said friend, this was about him: "Ok [dude], I'm not going to argue with you about this, this obviously
isn't about [said friend] owing me or you money anymore, it's about you wanting
money for your trip to Japan. I'm certainly not in the wrong - I could
have easily done worse, by taking out all his parts and selling them,
and then selling the car again to someone else who had the cash."
What did I get out of this? A lot of headaches and stupid shit. Sorry man, but this isn't worth it. If you're going to pay me back, stop avoiding me, and at least pay your other friends back as well. Next time I'll know better, and instead of being a nice guy and helping out, I'm going to not sell my car to you or let you borrow any fucking money.
